Jawed Usmani topped the Civil Service Examination & joined the Indian Administrative Service in 1978. In his career spanning more than 40 years at global, national, state & district levels with the Indian Administrative Service, Mr. Usmani has served at the highest echelons of the federal & state governments, including more than 8 years in the office of the Prime Minister of India, coordinating key social and economic portfolios. He has worked in senior policy advisory positions with 4 Indian Prime Ministers. As Joint Secretary to PM Vajpayee, Usmani played a key role in the conceptualization of the National Highways Development Project. With PM Manmohan Singh, he was instrumental in setting up of the Sachar Committee to study & report on the social, economic & educational status of the Muslim community of India. 

From 2015 to 2020 Mr. Usmani served in the statutory position of Chief Information Commissioner, Uttar Pradesh.

Since March 2020 Mr. Usmani divides his time working as honorary President of the non-profit SAFAR, providing strategic advisory and development contributions. He is also recording a series sharing his lessons on leadership.

Jawed Usmani has an MBA from IIM Ahmedabad & M.Sc. in Social Policy from the London School of Economics. Mr. Usmani is the first Indian Muslim to top the combined list of the UPSC Civil Services Examination.
